Coconut Husking for white girls

We decided to husk a coconut.  (well I decided and then I needed help)
I got a coconut....and could not husk it.  Kaylee has a screwdriver so we decided to use that.

This is actually Coconut number 2

We already busted one but it was defective....there are pictures.

we took turns making the veins
This is how white girls husk a coconut.  With a screwdriver.  We discovered that creating 'veins' from the top of the coconut down makes it so that we can actually rip the dang thing apart.

it got really tiering
Here we were sitting in the courtyard, creating seams in a coconut so we could tear it apart.
Coconut #1 and Coconut #2 un-husked
The first coconut was husked in the hallway....as people walked by and gave us rather questioning looks.

all polyneisan people who passed us chuckled...including.... =)
This Samoan guy comes into the Hale with his wife (which is odd because they don't do that) and looked over at me and said "You need a Samoan Man".   Yes, a Samoan man would husk the coconut for us, but that is hardly as adventureous.

The beautiful owner of the screwdriver

This screwdriver is one of those awesome ones that can be a flathead or a phillips.  So sometimes the end would stay stuck in the coconut.

My shirt says 'get Smoooshed!' I felt this was
 an apporpriate coconut husking shirt.

this is the first coconut's face

splitting the coconut

this is haaaaaard!
I'm sorry for the step-by-step pictures...

forget the gym...plant a coconut tree

THERE IT IS!!!!!!
 ...they're just so fun...

aaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhh!!!

she had a hard time getting the last part off

grrrrrrrr!

tada!  All husked

the guys at the Samoan village make it look so easy

awe, it has a face!

We are officially islanders
WE CAN HUSK A COCONUT!!!!!

Coconut Bras are overrated

I mean, really, this would be very uncomfortable

BAhahahahaha.

this is the good coconut
Coconut #2
The purpose of husking coconuts is this:  I have a cousin on a mission who now has a Tongan companion....and so I was going to send him a coconut, but I wanted to sent him an actual coconut and not one of those painted and hollowed out ones 'cause that's cheating but I learned that now you cannot send a coconut unless it has been agricultrually stamped.  This is my way of bypassing that stricture.  The problem with coconuts is that there have been booring beetles that have been brought to the mainland, but the beetles don't make it into the actual nut, only the husk.  You take off the husk, there will be no beetles.  So really, this should work.  Now I just need to find a box to send it in.  I'll write a letter, print pictures, stuff the coconut and send it on its way.  Happy One-year-mark/Christmas/New Years/Birthday/Valentine's Day/1-and-a-half-year mark/St Patrick's Day/Congratulations you're a Zone Leader/April Fools Day/May Day/LEI day (haha)....to Elder Nate.  phew! do you think I got all the calander holidays?

This is Coconut #1
we finally cracked this one.  It was broken when we husked it
it looks like a bird...but it also looks like the joker.
It's the coco-joker-bird.  Why so serious?
what if I'd sent him this one?   that would've been so sad.

and funny.

This is the inside of a rotten coconut.
Coconust are usually white inside.
...but it doesn't smell...
feels kinda like a rock.
No, we did not eat it!
