My sister Alayna is very smart.....She is also directionally challenged.
Alayna is a lifeguard. I am too!!!! We match. She is starting at the same pool I started at my first year.
She is kindof in the same situation. I was 16 but I absolutely refused to get my license....I was scared to death. She is barely 16 and she hasn't taken the permit test yet....but she wants to. (I will give my thoughts on this later). We match.
Pavilion Center Pool is far away from my house....not really, but yeah, it isn't close. Like, you could walk there if you're crazy or if it's winter, or you could take surface streets for 15 min or the freeway for 7....and they'd all get you there.
Well, this is how I used to get there. I rode my bike to the bus stop on Charleston then rode the bus to it's last stop- Red Rock Casino- on Pavilion Center Dr, then rode my bike on Pavilion Center to the pool. I had to leave my house 1 hour and a half before I worked. Why? To make sure that I was at the bus stop early enough so that, if one bus wouldn't let me on b/c the bike-rack was full, the next one probably would.
Well. Until this week, Alayna has worked the morning shift...from 6am to whenever and so my mother has driven her on the freeway to work. Uh ohhhhh.
Sunday. We were driving and so I drove her to the spot where the bus stop was so that she knew. THAT was such a good thing...because she wouldn't have realized.
My mom went over google maps and the bus route with her last night.
Her shift started at 9:45am. So on Monday she went alone. DUN Dun Dunnnnnnn.
She got to the bus stop and on the correct bus....yay.
BUT then she gets lost. So she calls the house and we tell her to cross the street and continue on Pavilion Center Dr- away from Red Rock Casino- and she'll get to work.
Instead turning around and continuing on Pavilion, as you see in the map above...she goes down Charleston...thinking that she was on Pavilion.
"I'm going downhill, is that right?"
NO!!!! you're on Charleston.
"Wait but there is a park thing"
(there is a little park thing that you pass on Pavilion, so I was like, okay maybe)
but then she says...."I'm at a thing that says Town Center.'
"Turn around. You are on Charleston. You went the wrong way"
it is at this point when I heard her tell someone
"No I don't know where that is, I'm on my phone now asking for directions."
she was in slight hysterics.
"What poor soul is asking you for directions??????"
"....are you there yet?"
"NO, I'm talking to you so I'm biking one handed and my hand coordination is not good and and and"
"Hang up and call us back when you get to Pavilion Center Dr"
"Okay"
the poor thing had to go uphill.
While she did that, I called the pool and talked to the manager, Mitch, and told him that she got lost but that I know where she is and I'm helping her get there, but she will be a bit late.....and she will be slightly traumatized, so be nice.
She calls back and I tell her to turn right, talking to her the whole way.
"Alayna, you don't have to talk to me the whole time, you can use 2 hands."
"oh, I am. I strapped the phone to my ear with the helmet strap."
picture that for me....close your eyes and just...envision that.
"ARIA! How do I get to the pool????"
"Well, don't you see it?"
"Yeah, I passed Alta, but how do I get in?"
"Well, it is across the street from you now, right?"
"Yeah"
"WELL USE THE CROSSWALK! There is a stop sign right next to the entrance to the parking lot. Cross when you get to the crosswalk and traverse the parking lot."
"Okay"
"You're only about 4 min late! Good job! I called Mitch for you, he know that you were going to be a bit late."
"I am NOT RIDING MY BIKE HERE TOMORROW!!!!!!'
'Haha, Yes you are, you're fine."
"NO NO NO, I'M NOT."
"okay fine." -I looked on the fridge...she didn't work the next day. HA
"Okay thanks, I'm here now. Bye"
She'll be okay.
My parents will get her a GPS for Christmas.
