the time spent for an eternity

When Melinda was first engaged I told her that I would help her with whatever she needed.  I meant it.

I helped a bit with the Bridal shower.
I kept kids entertained when we went to town for her dress fitting.
I sealed envelopes and wrote return addresses.
I listened to reception plans and wedding dreams.
I found places to get sparklers.

It's a good thing because this girl had a 10 hour final....2 days before her wedding.  10 hours.  Not kidding.  Some business class.
I had time.  I knew I would.  I had the brain power.  I had the heart.  I have some previous experience.

So on Thursday at 2pm I went to Sister Johnson's house.  The reception was held at her house, which is on The Point.  The Johnson's rent from an old lady, the house has a garden walkway, a large deck overlooking the ocean, many windows, well lit....it's gorgeous.  Also, the windows have almost never been washed.  That was my job on Thursday at 2.  Eleven windows. About 3 hours of scrubbing.  Did they look any better?  Personally, no they did not.  But I was told they improved marginally.  After the windows we wrapped trees in lights.  By this time the maid of honor, Kelly, was there and Melinda was there as well.  We started wrapping them like temple square...then we realized that we did not have enough lights.  I ended up un-wrapping and re-wrapping a few of the trees 3 times.  That's okay.  It all worked.  Oh- then we ate.  I learned a lot about Melinda as she filled the Johnsons in on the circumstances which brought her to this spot.  I left to call my dad for his birthday and thank him for teaching me how to work.  I know how.  I enjoy it.  It was coming in extremely useful at the moment.  Then I moved excess furniture off the deck so we were more ready for the details.

On Friday, in order-
I had finals
I stepped into work to make sure the grades were getting in. They weren't, so I fixed that.
I went home and packed  a little bit.
I made lunch for my lovely roommate Cali who left me.  :(  I sent her with something to eat
I put everything she left in a box that I will get to her later.
I dropped off knives at Sister Johnson's house because I have good knives and she doesn't have many.
I dropped off ribbon and ribbon leis to my friend on campus- another friend got married on Tuesday
I went to a birthday shindig/farewell dinner for a friend
I practically ran to the Johnson's and spent hours cutting fruit.
namely Pineapples.  I am not good at cutting mangoes. I pealed them.... Then I cut grape bunches.
I met Aaron's (groom) parents. They are really good people.  Learned a lot about them.  Also learned that working and talking at the same time is a rare skill.  We went over last minute decorating plans and emergency rain plans.   Melinda, Aaron, and Kelly took me home.  I was home for about 5 minutes, enough time to make sure they were gone before I went on a mission.

A secret mission (not really secret, Kelly was in on it)
A mission to find Plumerias.
A dangerous mission, because it was 11pm and everyone had recently trimmed their plumeria trees.  I remember the day they were trimmed.  I knew Melinda's dream was to have fresh leis when they came out of the temple.  There were very few flowers to be found.  Dangit.
I had kept my eye out, but there were not many flowering trees.  An hour later, I had enough flowers to make 2 leis but I needed more. :/
At 8am on Saturday, I woke up and finished packing.  Then I went with Abby, my housemate, to Laie cemetery and literally stripped all those trees of their flowers.  :o They'd been pruned recently as well, so that took a while.  Too long.  We threw on our dresses and didn't even string the leis but took the materials and the flowers and ran to the temple.  It was 9:30.  Melinda and Aaron were due to walk out of the temple at 10.  I had a few needles, I put the thread on them and had the groomsmen string on the flowers.

(the photographer got a kick out of that)
With the help of the groomsmen, the leis were ready when the couple came out.

It was a beautiful morning.  Perfect in every way.

Saturday....to be continued
