privileged

Today I went into the library to borrow a book that I need to read for my History class.  It's a long book, I may get a different one, but...
As I handed the worker my student ID, I realized that my ID has expired.  It says so on the card. 'EXP: 12/31/2011'  Oh no, I think, are they gonna let me take out the book??  What if some other student has the same idea and come gets the book while I'm ushering at the concert tonight?   I was bracing myself for failure but instead the guy scans my ID and hands it back to me than says "Alright, your book is due....wait, is that right? (he was new to the front desk and the library lady was there guiding him) It says you are a Student Instructor...can that be right?"

I'm taken aback, but eventually I get out the words..."Well, I'm a TA"---utterly confused.

"Then that's right." says the library lady.

"Okay," says a bemused worker "your book is due on April 13th....that's the last day of the semester!"

I think we were both in awe of my heretofore unknown library privileges.

Today, in the work meeting, Brother Griffiths (the online department boss extraordinaire) reiterated to us the importance of being an example, being in standards at all times, going to devotionals, etc etc because we (the TAs) are the face of BYUH for much of the World.  Its scary because it's true.  Our department is growing and its exciting.

Have I told you that I love my job?  I was so excited on Sunday I could barely talk.  I sat down and thought about why.  I'm taking some cool stuff, but that wasn't it.  I was excited to come into work.  I was smiling so much my face muscles were tired and I could barely talk about it out of sheer giddiness.  My job is boring a lot of the time and rather repetitive, but I absolutely adore the people I work with.  I love all of them wholeheartedly.  I realized something- I want to always feel that way about work and the people I work with.  I always want to be so excited to go to work that I can barely speak.  BYUH online is going to start a Pathways program like the one BYUI has and we've talked about re-locating in the distant future to the old Church High School in New Zealand...only we're growing a lot faster than expected and the New Zealand building is gearing up to become an online education building.  The First Presidency (of The Church of JESUS CHRIST of Latter-day Saints) is happy with the work we're doing (I was impressed) so it may be sooner than we thought.  All the present and past TAs have a standing invitation and I think that is something I could be persuaded to do.

It's one of those moments where it may be okay to feel special...but I'll take the book back before the end of the semester anyway
